To qualify for an RDP house you must meet the National Housing Subsidy Scheme criteria. This means you must:

• Be a South African citizen.
• Be contractually capable.
• Be married or habitually cohabit with a partner.
• Be single and have financial dependants.
• Earn less than R3 500.01 per month per household.
• Be a first time government subsidy recipient.
• Be a first time home owner.
• Be single military veteran without financial dependant.
• Be single aged persons without financial dependant

To apply for a government subsidy house, take the following documents to the provincial office of the Department of Human Settlements at 68 Voortrekker Road, Nevada Building, in Alberton.

• Applicant and spouse’s IDs.
• Birth certificates of children.
• Proof of income if working (salary slip).

After you deal with the application procedure, the next step is the housing waiting list check. The waiting list is to check your registration status and if your application process has begun. You can check your status either using an internet device or visit the closest human settlements department.

After you have applied, you will receive proof of registration (form C). This form shows your application number and date. To check if your name status is on the provincial waiting list, take the form to the nearest Housing Provincial Office. If your name appears on the record, then the process has begun. Alternatively, you can check your status by calling the main number – 0800 146 873.

Once on the database, when a house becomes available the beneficiary will be notified and will need to sign a ‘happy letter.’ The title deed to the house is then be issued.
